So many of you know about my current employment woes, and how I've been applying to jobs with not a whole lot of success. I had my brother look at my resume today to see if there were any glowing deficiencies in it.
He concluded that there was not. However he did say that it was very non-bs. My work history and a lot of the facets of the whole thing pointed to that I was dependable, intelligent, and trustworthy.
This is not a bad thing. They're great traits that everyone where we grew up and the 81 corridor would appreciate. However, they're not NoVa types of traits. In a way, I'm almost too down to earth to work here. I'm a real person who has had real experiences. I got a real degree. I didn't do BS internships during the summer and study International Affairs.
No the problem is that I am Winchester through and through. I'm a bit Harrisonburg and Blacksburg as well. So those places are where I'll start looking from now on. Guys, I think I'm going home. Or at least back to the real world and out of this God forsaken place.

Dude. I'm telling you, its the area. I look at the people around me and who are successful up here and it's like talking to a bad movie. Things like "its just business" and "corporate right-sizing" are actual things up here. I just don't have it in me. I still have my soul (and no I don't mean that as in everyone is evil kind of way, but its half evil and half business robot).

As long as you do what you love, I don't think location should be much of an issue as long as getting there is cheap and easy.

Nothing in NoVa is cheap or easy. Especially when it comes to getting places. Another reason to get outta here.

Anywhere but Florida seems to be the vibe I get from the internet.

Shamelessly exploit your friends and family to network. Shamelessly use nepotism. Everybody who did get hired is. Two jobs ago (and my prospects got progressively better) I went back closer to my home part of Virginia and got something that way. I've been laterally able to get closer to what I wanted since. A lot of Virginia is about your people, no matter where you are.

good luck man. I'll tell you this, unless you're looking for a job in DC that requires clearance you'll most likely be relying on connections in NoVa. It's all about who ya know....

That's what I'm starting to do now. I applied at a different branch of the company where my brother works. And I also gave my resume to one of my wife's friends who is a social butterfly. Here's hoping it works sooner rather than later!

I know man. I guess I shoulda spent less time studying in college and more time "networking".
